One stitch to a pleat, with the thread above the needle for one and below it for the next, so the row looks like two lines of little bricks locked together. Work it in 8 passes: bring the needle up at each odd number and down at the even number after it.

The firmest row in smocking: top and bottom of a panel, where the pleats must hold their place. It has little stretch.

- The pleats are what you count here: the thread only takes the top third of each fold. Come up in the valley on the left of the first pleat, with the thread above the needle. Hold the needle level. Take the next pleat from its right side to its left: this is an up cable.Рахують тут складки: нитка бере лише верхню третину кожної.
