1. Over the padded shape (waxed string stitched down and tapered), start halfway along. With a double waxed thread, come up on one side. Cut a length of purl on a velvet board, thread it and hold it across the padding at 45 degrees; press the needle into it where it meets the cloth on the far side. Take it off, cut it there, thread it again and slide it down the thread like a long bead, without touching it. 2. Ease the purl round the padding with a mellor while you draw the thread snug, so that it follows the shape closely without cracking. 3. Finish that half to the tip, shortening the purls as the padding narrows. Keep a cut piece as a pattern for the next length. Tips and common mistakesПоради й типові помилки

• A purl cut too long: it arches and buckles. Too short, and it lies on the padding like a stub, with sewing thread showing.
