How to do a detached wheat ear stitch
A chain loop held by a short straight stitch, with two slanting stitches meeting in a V below it, like a single ear of wheat. Work it in 4 passes: bring the needle up at each odd number and down at the even number after it.

Odd numbers: the needle comes up. Even numbers: it goes down.
The cloth turned over: the thread’s travel from each down hole to its next up hole. Where it starts and is finished off is not shown.
The grid is only for reading the diagram. This stitch is not counted: work it along a line drawn on the cloth, in stitches of a length that suits your thread and the curve.
What it is used forЗастосування
Scattered as a filling in crewel work, fields of wheat and grass, small sprigs and decorative powdering.
Step by step
- Come up at the top of the ear, go back down the same hole and come up a little below, inside the loop. Draw it up gently into a small round loop.
- Hold the loop with a straight stitch going straight down from inside it. Its length is up to you: short as here, or long like a stalk.
- Add a slanting stitch on the left, at about 45°: up out to the side, level with the lower part of the loop, and down just left of the end of the straight stitch.
- Add the matching one on the right, going down at the same height just beside it. The two make the V of the ear.
Tips and common mistakes
- Slanting stitches of different lengths or heights: the ear looks lopsided. Mark the V if your eye needs help.
- Confusing it with tête de boeuf, where the two slanting stitches sit above the loop like a bull’s horns, and books often swap the two names. Decide which shape you are after before you start.
