A long float over the cloth, a short pick-up, then another float. Row under row, these lines fill a field with a pattern that looks woven. Work it in 3 passes: bring the needle up at each odd number and down at the even number after it.

- The long float lies over the cloth — two cells here. How many is decided by the pattern.Довгий стібок лягає поверх тканини — тут через дві клітинки. Скільки саме, вирішує візерунок.
- The needle picks up a single cell and comes back to the surface. That pick-up is shorter than the float, which is the whole difference from running stitch.Голка підхоплює лише одну клітинку й виходить нагору. Підхватка коротша за стібок — у цьому вся відмінність від шва «уперед голку».
- A third long float closes the row. Rows go one under another with their starts shifted, and the pattern is born from that.Третій довгий стібок замикає ряд. Ряди кладуть один під одним, зсуваючи початок, — так і народжується візерунок.
Done. Both lengths, the float and the pick-up, belong to the pattern; the only constant is that the first is greater than the second.
